Every PCB starts with its "substrate"—the insulating material that determines how the board handles heat and electricity. While FR-4 (Flame Retardant 4) is the industry workhorse due to its balance of cost and durability, the rise of high-frequency tech is shifting the landscape.

Why Material Selection is Critical
Thermal Conductivity: In high-power applications like EV charging or industrial power supplies, standard FR-4 may struggle to dissipate heat. Metal-core PCBs (MCPCBs) or ceramic-filled laminates are used to pull heat away from sensitive chips.
Dielectric Constant Dk: For RF (Radio Frequency) designs, the material's Dk must be ultra-stable. Materials like Rogers or Teflon-based laminates minimize signal loss where FR-4 might "leak" energy.Choosing the right base is a subtle yet vital design decision that affects long-term reliability.
