When we look at a PCB, the first thing that catches our eye is its surface color.Such as green, red, blue, black, and white. This color is not just for showing; it's the critical solder mask layer. Its primary functions are to prevent solder bridges during assembly, and protect the copper traces from oxidation and physical damage.

The solder mask can be formulated with inks to present a wide array of colors for different applications. Common colors include green, white, blue, black, red, yellow, matte, purple, and even special options like chrysanthemum yellow, bright green, matte black, and matte green.

The choice of color often serves practical purposes. For instance, white solder mask is the preferred choice for LED lighting product PCBs due to its high reflectivity, which enhances light output. Other colors are frequently used for internal product grading or identification within companies. Some might use red to mark experimental prototypes, blue for critical boards, while black is often chosen for high-end or internal computer components to create a sleek, unified aesthetic.

Despite the variety, over 80% of PCBs worldwide are green. This is not by accident, but due to several key factors:

Most Mature Process, Optimal Cost: Green solder mask ink has the longest development history and the most mature, stable manufacturing process. This ensures readily available raw materials and makes its production cost more competitive compared to other colors. A mature process also translates to higher yield rates and more consistent quality.

Excellent Visual Inspection Properties: During manufacturing and repair, technicians need to inspect the boards carefully. The high contrast between the green background and white silkscreen (component legends) makes it easier to identify characters and spot defects like solder bridges or open circuits, effectively reducing eye strain and misjudgment.

Reliable Signal Performance: In high-speed circuit design, green solder mask is known for its relatively stable and reliable electrical properties, and its impact on signal integrity is well-understood and verified.

Consequently, green stands out as the most cost-effective and reliable choice. Even within the green spectrum, variations like bright green, light green, and matte green are available to meet subtle aesthetic or functional preferences.

In our next article,we will keep on learning the knowledge of the color of PCB solder mask.
